How to choose a patient-lift sling

Size, posture, hygiene and compatibility: slings are not universal.

Reviewed with care·

A good lift can still be unsafe if the sling does not fit the person and the equipment. Size, posture, hygiene and compatibility: slings are not universal.

A good fit when: a full-body supported transfer is required, the four-point sling is compatible and the base fits under the bed or chair.

I would not choose it if: a stand aid is required, the transfer route has not been measured or nobody has been trained to use it.

Assistive equipment does not replace clinical or occupational-therapy assessment when there is pain, a fall, a wound, sudden deterioration or an unsafe transfer.

What a lift sling must solve

A full-body sling supports a different task from a standing aid or a repositioning sheet. Describe the transfer from start to finish: bed to chair, toileting or another destination; whether the person can bear weight, hold their head and trunk, and cooperate; and how much help the caregiver can provide. Have a qualified professional assess an unsafe or changing transfer plan.

Five checks before choosing a size

  1. Task and posture: determine the intended transfer and the support needed at the head, trunk and thighs. A toileting cut-out can reduce support and may be unsuitable.
  2. Exact compatibility: check the sling model, loops or clips, spreader bar and lift against the manufacturers’ instructions. Do not assume that four hooks mean any four-point sling will fit.
  3. Person’s measurements: use the sling maker’s size chart, including the measurements it requests, rather than clothing size or body weight alone.
  4. Working load: verify the safe working load of lift, sling and spreader bar. The lowest applicable limit governs, and a number on the lift alone does not establish suitability.
  5. Care and inspection: check material, washing and drying instructions, seams and labels; inspect before use and follow the care plan on staffing and attachment configuration.

How the Mobiclinic example relates to a sling

The Mobiclinic Fortuna Basic lift is listed by its manufacturer for a maximum of 180 kg, with a four-point sling supplied in the described package. That rating is for the lift; confirm the supplied or replacement sling, its size and rated load for the particular transfer. See the Mobiclinic review for the lift itself, and the home lift guide for doorways, base and under-bed clearance.

When to stop and get an assessment

Do not improvise with an unknown sling, missing label, damaged stitching, incompatible attachment or unstable posture. Seek clinical or occupational-therapy advice for pain, recent falls, wounds, sudden weakness or uncertain head and trunk control. Follow the agreed moving-and-handling plan and the manufacturer; a web page cannot specify a safe loop setting or number of carers for an individual.

HSE guidance on moving-and-handling equipment explains sling size, task and lift compatibility. The Mobiclinic product information identifies the reference lift and its limit.
