Bed-exit alarms and cognitive impairment

Alerting is not prevention: response, lighting and a falls plan are still needed.

Reviewed with care·

An alarm buys seconds. It only helps when someone can use those seconds and respond. Alerting is not prevention: response, lighting and a falls plan are still needed.

Options for this need

A good fit when: a nearby caregiver can respond and the sensor can be positioned to detect the relevant movement without invading privacy.

I would not choose it if: it is expected to prevent a fall or there is no response plan for each alert.

Assistive equipment does not replace clinical or occupational-therapy assessment when there is pain, a fall, a wound, sudden deterioration or an unsafe transfer.

How to make the decision

A wireless alert that tells the caregiver someone is attempting to rise; it does not restrain or prevent a fall.

  • A nearby caregiver able to respond
  • An identified risk of rising without help
  • Lighting and a clear route already in place

The boundary not to cross

An alarm cannot compensate for a slow response or replace a falls assessment. It may disturb sleep or startle; test volume and placement.

Seek clinical or occupational-therapy advice for new severe pain, an open wound, a recent fall, sudden weakness, breathing difficulty or inability to control head and trunk. An online guide cannot assess those risks remotely.

A note for the caregiver
