Bed height for care and transfers: what to measure

A height that suits care work may not suit sitting or transferring. Compare the platform range, installed mattress and planned task; a single fixed measurement cannot suit everyone.

Separate three measurements

MeasurementWhat it helps establish
Floor to platformThe lifting mechanism’s range. Check whether the quoted figure includes a mattress.
Floor to mattress surfaceThe actual surface in use; it changes when the mattress or overlay changes.
Surface relative to railsEffective rail height and gaps must be checked with the complete system in its different positions.

Sitting, transferring and care have different requirements

For sitting at the edge, consider foot support, balance and the assistance used to stand. A height chosen for care work may remove that foot support. Choose the adjustment around the person and task.

A seated transfer also involves compression of the mattress and chair cushion. Similar unloaded heights alone do not establish a safe technique. If the person cannot participate or the transfer is unsafe, equipment and assistance need assessment. HSE’s person-centred handling guidance.

Read a catalogue range in context

Ask where it is measured and which bed size it describes. Geriafy’s page shows conflicting ranges, so we do not calculate a guaranteed finished height from an unclarified figure.

Gerialift publishes 37–77 cm for its 90 × 190 model; Quirumed lists 45–89 cm for trolley with platform. These are equipment specifications, not recommended heights for every user. Compare the documented references.

Under-bed clearance is a separate check

A raised sleeping surface does not establish that a mobile lift fits underneath. Check crossbars, base height, leg opening and approach space in the intended positions.

Record before ordering

  • Exact bed size, platform range and mattress reference.
  • The intended sitting, care and transfer settings assessed for the person.
  • Side access and clearance for existing equipment.
  • Brake operation, handset functions and power-failure procedure.

Review the fit when mobility, mattress or overlays change. Do not use a rail as a grab handle unless it is designed and approved for that use.
